How to Research at HSLB - Historical Society of Long Beach

In an effort to preserve the HSLB’s collection and to staff the research center, we charge a $40 research fee for researchers who are not members. Membership levels start at $75 (or $35 for students and $50 for seniors, with proof), however, so we encourage you to consider joining if you have not already. Members may conduct research at our gallery and archives at 4260 Atlantic Avenue for no additional fee as long as their membership is active.

To schedule a research appointment, please fill out and submit the Research Request Form provided via the link below. Please allow 48 HOURS notice for the staff to prepare and confirm your appointment.

Remote Research

Depending on research needs, HSLB Staff may be able to provide remote research assistance via email. Remote Research still requires completing a research request form, please click below. HSLB staff members will estimate time for research in advance.

A minimum $50 remote research fee must be paid in advance. An additional $35 per hour may be required before the research is provided.

Remote research is subject to HSLB capacity.

Documents and ephemera may be copied at a rate of $1.00 a page. Photographs may not be copied. Click here for a selection of available photographic reproductions.

We will do our best to answer inquiries. Payment does not guarantee that we have the requested information, only that we will provide access to materials from our collection. Please note that our Historical Newspaper Collection represents only those volumes that could be preserved and has many chronological gaps (almost all of those gaps, however, are covered by microfilm archives, sets of which exist at both HSLB and the Long Beach Public Library).
