The following pages contain photos, documents, resources, and videos from the HSLB Cambodian Community History and Archive Project. In these pages you will find information on Cambodia’s 2,000-year history and culture; materials on Cambodia’s Civil War and Khmer Rouge period (1970’s and 1980’s); the Cambodian Diaspora and United States’ refugee resettlement policies; how Cambodian refugees built communities throughout the U.S.; profiles focusing on just a few of the many Cambodian American individuals who made an impact over the years; and fifteen oral histories from the Cambodian American 1.5 Generation Oral History Project conducted by Pacific Asian Counseling Services and funded by the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health.
Within these pages we try to tell the story of why Cambodians came to the U.S., how their cultural practices have been recreated here, and the ways Cambodians have contributed to the social, cultural, economic, and political revitalization of the communities in which they have settled. This is not a complete story, but it is a beginning. We are hopeful we will be able to continue to add to these pages.
